FAQs

Where does my garbage go?
All of the garbage from Northumberland County is sent to the Red Pine Sanitary Landfill facility located at 1300 Route 360, Allardville, New Brunswick.

What is a sanitary landfill?
A sanitary landfill is a specialized garbage disposal area. Garbage is compacted and covered with a layer of soil and liners of clay and plastic protect groundwater from leachate.

What is leachate?
Leachate is a toxic liquid that is created as water from rain and snow percolates down through the layers of garbage.

What makes a landfill safer than a dump?
The open dumps that we used in the past were very harmful to the environment. Garbage was often burned creating air pollution and because they did not have protective liners, leachate could enter the water table, contaminating local waterways and drinking water supplies.

Why should I recycle and compost?
The Northumberland region landfills approximately 27,000 metric tonnes of garbage every year. By recycling and composting, we can significantly reduce that amount, extending the usable life of the landfill and protecting our environment.
